Is Fall The Best Season?

With the end of August, fall is right around the corner. You can feel it in the air when you leave for work, the hint of cooler weather approaching. Nurseries have mums out for sale. Home stores have released their new fall collections.

Fall always brings feelings of nostalgia for me. It reminds me of elementary school, being forced to start wearing long sleeves. The halloween parties you have with your class. Saturdays where my dad would wake up early to mow the law so he didn’t miss 11am kickoff. Football always on the TV, people in and out of the house. Having the windows open to let the cool air in.

The start of fall brings arguable the best stretch of the year. Holiday after holiday, plenty of reasons to do activities with friends and family. Getting to decorate your home to have a subtle cozy feeling to accompany the cooler weather.

The weather, arguably, is one of the best parts of fall. At this point, we’re all tired of the heat and need that cool refreshing breeze more than anything. Summer is gone, school is back in session, and the last thing we want is 100 degree heat another day. Having those cool 70 degree days are something we all crave, we can almost smell the fresh cool air on the horizon.

The whisper of a new season approaching also brings on the excitement of a new fashion cycle. What have I been craving to break out since last year? What’s trending that I can’t wait to participate in? You finally get to unlock a section of your closet that’s been collecting dust.

This fall, I think fashion will continue to get back to the basics. Vogue seems to think so as well, seeing more classical choices from the runway. It seems a lot of brands are taking a ‘softer’ approach, which feels just right for fall. ‘Corporate’ fashion, classic checkered patters, fluffy coats and simple cuts can be seen all over stores front windows. This continues the capsule wardrobe trend from over the past year.

Being in the south, we have to wait a bit longer before we fully bring out the fall wardrobe. The wishy-washy weather won’t fully settle until November, sometimes still we receive the surprising warm day. Other parts of the country will have already broken in their new cardigans and boots, the new smell from their leather jackets gone.

Another argument to be made for fall, and one we in the south feel deeply, is the start of college football. There is nothing quite like football season, the buzz in the air on gamedays. Having lived in a college town for the majority of my life, you could always tell when a gameday loomed near. People stocking up on chips and dip, making plans for whose house to go to or if they plan to tailgate on campus.

Growing up, my family never missed a Texas game. The longhorns were always on the TV, the passion for the game radiating off my parents and forcing me to care as well. Their love for the game was passed onto me like a genetic trait, and God bless whoever sits next to me when Auburn is playing.

Then being raised in Tuscaloosa, football was THE only thing that mattered. It was what people looked forward to and then wished to come back. There wasn’t a time of year that football wasn’t somehow mentioned or brought up in conversation.

Now, all of this makes a very convincing argument. This is not to say I don’t love spring or summer (not winter, sorry). But there’s just something so special about fall, the feeling in the air and the way people come together. Whether this be through sports, holidays, or the fact we can finally sit outside to enjoy each others company, there’s just something about this time of year.
